A Very Poodley Birthday...Cake!!

Today was my poodle, Calypso's, fourth birthday. If you can't tell from the theme of the web page, she means quite a lot to me. So, I decided to make today extra special by making her a yummy doggy birthday cake. As an added bonus, I decided to make enough to hand out to clients at work tomorrow. It'll be like an extended party!

I want to first make an important note: always keep your dog's allergies in mind. This particular recipe has chicken, corn, and flour in it. If your dog has any kind of food sensitivities this probably isn't the treat for them. There's plenty of good recipes out there for dogs with serious allergies. Also, if you're making any kind of treat to give out to clients (I like to make them for Halloween goody bags) be sure you make a label listing ALL the ingredients. I'm giving these away, not selling them, so I usually make a card with the entire recipe so that my clients can make them at home if they'd like. Finally, this should in no way replace your dog's usual daily diet. It's a treat that should be given occasionally and in small quantities.

Ingredients:

  • 3 cups flour
  • 1 Tablespoon baking powder
  • 1/2 cup margarine, softened
  • 6 eggs, beaten
  • 1/2 cup corn oil
  • 2 jars strained chicken baby food
  • 2 cups finely shredded carrots
  • plan or vanilla yogurt or cream cheese
  • several strips of bacon fried crisp (or the pre-cooked kind), then crumbled., or use Beggin' Strips
  • Dog treats for garnish

Generously grease and flour your cake pan. This particular recipe is set up to fill two 8" cake pans. I wanted to make one medium size cake and then some treat sized ones to give out. So, I used a 6" round and a muffin tin.

Combine flour and baking powder; set aside.

In a mixing bowl, beat softened margarine until smooth. Add eggs and corn oil; mix well.

Add strained chicken and shredded carrots; mix until smooth.

Add flour mixture and mix thoroughly.

Pour batter into prepared pans. Four 2 8" pans bake at 325 degrees for 60 minutes. For six inch rounds or muffin tins, bake at 350 degrees for about 40 minutes.

Let cool a few minutes before removing from pans. Cool completely on wire racks (if you're cool enough to have wire racks...unlike me.)

When cool, cut cake in half. Place one layer on a serving plate and spread yogurt or cream cheese over top. Sprinkle bacon over the cream cheese.

Place second layer on top, then spread yogurt or cream cheese on top and sides of entire cake.

Sprinkle crumbled bacon or other garnish or decorations on top.

Use "Pupperoni" sticks for candles.

For the mini versions that I made for my clients, I basically made them the same way. I also added just a touch of shredded Parmesan on top to look like sprinkles.

Happy Birthday Caly!
Wait for it...
